CHEMICAL PEEL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What is a chemical peel? It is a chemical solution that is applied to the area being treated. Chemical peels are an exfoliation treatment for the skin using a chemical agent. Benefits are: to create a thicker epidermis, more collagen and elastin in the dermis, tightening of the skin, improvement of fine lines and wrinkles, and a reduction in irregular skin color and uneven skin tone. This class of peeling agents are call AHAs or alpha-hydroxy acids.
What We Use We use a 30% glycolic acid peel with a PH of 1.2. Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid and is found in sugar cane. It has the smallest molecular size of all the AHAs and can penetrate the skin better than any of the other ones because of the size of the molecules. Therefore, it can also be more irritating too. If you have sensitive skin we would use the lighter beta-hydroxy acid.
A series of 6-8 peels is needed about every two weeks apart.
Is an anesthetic needed during the peel treatment? Usually not, since the chemical itself acts as an anesthetic. With AHA peels there is only a slight stinging – so no anesthetic or sedation is needed.
What can I expect after a chemical peel treatment? There may be some flaking or scaling, redness and dryness – but this all clears up over time. It is important to avoid sun exposure for a period of time. The results far out-weigh the temporary discomfort involved.
How long does a chemical peel treatment take? A peel can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending upon the type of peel used and the size of the area being treated.
